ABS Genus Dairy farmers travel over to see (IG) Ireland Genetics progeny on home soil
(IG) Ireland Genetics recently had the pleasure of hosting a fantastic group of UK dairy farmers from ABS Genus, all loyal users of IG sires in their herds.
The primary objective of their visit was to observe firsthand the performance of daughters sired by the very same IG bulls they utilize in their own UK herds. The group visited the following high EBI dairy herds:
- Paul & Siofra Ryan, Killeen, Riverstown, Birr, Co.Tipperary
- Bill & Shane Delahunt, Coraduff, Birr, Co.Offaly
- John & Jimmy Bourke, Rathcunikeen, Two Mile Borris, Thurles, Co. Tipperary
- Lottie and David Russell, Corbally House, Thurles, County Tipperary.
These farms showcased a diverse range of environments and management systems, providing a comprehensive picture of how the IG genetics perform under varying conditions.
The visiting farmers saw robust, healthy herds exhibiting strong production, excellent fertility, and desirable conformation traits – all hallmarks of the IG breeding programme. Discussions with the Irish host farmers covered a wide range of topics, including breeding strategies, youngstock rearing, pasture management, and the integration of technology in modern dairy farming.
The groups also received a detailed talk from NCBC CEO Dr. Doreen Corridan. She spoke about the NCBC breeding programs and the diverse range of sires the organization consistently produces, which are suitable for various farming systems. The group also visited the Moorepark’25 Open Day.
This visit marks the third time in the past 12 months that ABS Genus has brought a group of UK dairy farmers to experience Ireland’s dairy industry and witness the success of (IG) Ireland Genetics. The consistent interest underscores the strong partnership between ABS Genus and (IG) Ireland Genetics, and the value placed on direct observation and data-driven decision-making in genetic selection. Such trips allow for great exchanges of experiences and learnings which are invaluable. (IG) Ireland Genetics is extremely grateful to Genus ABS for continually facilitating these regular trips for it’s customers who continually use our sires in their herds.
Many thanks are due to the host farmers who gave of their time and facilities to accommodate this trip. Many thanks also to Sean Hayes (Progressive Genetics Breeding Advisor) for his assistance prior to and during the trip.
