Social Media Post after the UK July 2024 trip
(IG) Ireland Genetics & Progressive Genetics recently hosted members of the Genus UK sales team and dairy farmers from various parts of the UK, with different systems of dairy farming, on a trip to Ireland.
The Genus UK group was given excellent presentations in Teagasc Grange by Joe Patton and Jamie O’Driscoll. Joe underlined the important role that research has played in underpinning our Dairy EBI selection index. Jamie gave an overview outside of ongoing dairy-beef and red clover trial work together with the initial results that have been recorded.
The group then visited the herds of Christy Reynolds, Giltown, Garlow, Navan,Co,Meath and James Tallon, Fennor, Ardcath, Garristown, Co.Dublin where David Reynolds and Niall Tallon gave superb talks to the group. All aspects of their farming systems were shared, from the role high EBI genetics is playing in their herd’s performance figures through to the day-to-day running of their herds and the many management decisions that have to be made.
The group then had a memorable visit to the herd of Pat Walsh, Lispopple, Swords, County Dublin. Pat is a recent new entrant to dairy farming and milks his high EBI dairy herd through the Lely robot milking system. Pat gave a great talk about his herd’s background, their genetics and how he manages them with the robot throughout the year which the group found very interesting.
Progressive Genetics and Munster Bovine jointly setup NCBC (The National Cattle Breeding Centre) to operate their dairy & beef breeding activities, sourcing bulls, progeny testing and producing semen for their studs. (IG) Ireland Genetics was established to market and distribute these same genetics internationally.
